In the
courtyard inside the Fortress'
Museum (the place for theatre shows and concerts
during the summer) there are two bastions (Male and Female) where in ancient
times a garrison of soldiers used to live. At the end of the XVIII century
the Fortress became a prison (until the 1967). Inside the Female Bastion
there is the Agricultural
Museum.
The tall ancient walls link the Malatestas'
Fortress to the Old Fortress (residence of Federico Barbarossa in 1177,
and residence of Federico II from Swabia in 1241) that was conquered by
the Cardinal Albornoz in 1357. After the construction of a stronger Fortress
by Malatesta during the XV century, the Old Fortress was abandoned.
